Will the FreedomFi 5G Gateway operate in rural environments?

The FreedomFi 5G Gateway will work in any area of the US but Helium rewards and earnings may vary depending on your area's traffic.

I need technical support and would like to get in touch with your team.

Please go to our support page here and fill out the form with all of your FreedomFi 5G Gateway details as well as the issues you are experiencing.

I have a YouTube channel and I want to be a part of your affiliate program.

Currently we are not exploring promotions like this, if anything changes in the future we will certainly make an announcement on our official social media in regards to this.

Where can I report false information or scams about FreedomFi?

You can report any unusual activity directly to us, by emailing us at [email protected].

What is Helium, and why should I care.

Helium has and continues to build a decentralized low power low-cost communications network based upon blockchain technology; for further detail, please check out the documentation provided by Helium.

How will I make money by hosting a Helium-compatible FreedomFi 5G Gateway?

FreedomFi 5G Gateway hosts will provide wireless network coverage for IoT devices and cellular devices (like cell phones) operating in the CBRS spectrum band In return for providing this coverage and passing data through the device, operators are rewarded with the new MOBILE variant of the HNT cryptocurrency. HNT cryptocurrency is freely exchangeable to other cryptocurrencies (such as Bitcoin etc.) or fiat currencies at many popular cryptocurrency exchanges.

Please refer to public data sources for HNT price and places to trade.

How good should my internet connection be for this to work?

The FreedomFi CBRS Indoor Small Cell and FreedomFi 5G Gateway can do 220 Mbps downlink and 12 Mbps uplink and should be plugged into a wired Ethernet internet connection capable of these speeds. Any installation at a location with lower throughput will affect the performance and mining capability of the small cell.

Will FreedomFi Gateways work outside of the US?

Not at this time. Our initial release focuses on mobile data offload using the CBRS spectrum band, which is only available in the US. As we expand into Wi-Fi-based mobile data offload and add new data roaming partners and radio vendors, we’ll be rolling out the services in countries out of the US. Expect to hear more soon.

Is this 5G or LTE?

This is not a black or white answer. 5G is an architecture standard for cellular wireless networks that covers:

  • Architecture of the software (aka the network core);

  • Architecture of the radio hardware

Contrary to the common belief, 5G is not specific to a frequency band and is not the same as high frequency mmWave. 5G uses much of the same frequencies as LTE.

With the Helium 5G rollout, we use the CBRS spectrum (aka mid-band 5G spectrum) and provide a 5G-compliant architecture for the network core that runs on a FreedomFi 5G Gateway. However, the first cellular radio we certified as part of this bundle is LTE.

Why? Because LTE small cells are cheaper and more phones can connect to them. With pure 5G small cells today you gain nothing except higher equipment cost and a shorter phone compatibility list. As “high-band” 5G small cells operating in the mmWave frequencies become more common-place and cheaper, we will certify those radios and FreedomFi 5G Gateway owners will be able plug them into the gateway without needing to buy a different FreedomFi 5G Gateway.

And, yes, we admit that we call this setup Helium 5G vs. LTE because it sounds cooler. If everybody else in the industry can, so can we.

Will standalone FreedomFi Gateway mine more HNT than other hotspots?

No, the FreedomFi Gateway mines the same amount of HNT as any other Helium hotspot with the same placement and antenna. When connected to a Powered by FreedomFi certified CBRS small cell, the  FreedomFi Gateway  will earn MOBILE tokens as well as mining HNT by providing LoRa network connectivity.

Do I need an ethernet cable to connect FreedomFi Gateway to the Internet or can it use Wi-Fi?

The only way to connect FreedomFi 5G Gateway to the Internet is by plugging in an ethernet cable to the WAN port of the gateway. Unlike some other Helium hotspots, FreedomFi 5G Gateways do not come with Wi-Fi built-in.

How can I add a 5G radio?

To add 5G cellular support to your FreedomFi Gateway, purchase a certified plug-and-play Powered by FreedomFi CBRS small cell, connect it to the gateway and follow the onboarding steps to get it registered on the network, operational and earning MOBILE tokens for providing network coverage.

Must I buy the $1000 radio with the FreedomFi Gateway right away?

No. You can buy the FreedomFi 5G Gateway, which, if properly placed, will mine LoRa rewards just like any other Helium hotspot and add a CBRS radio to it at a later time to mine additional rewards for the cellular data offload.

Can I deploy the FreedomFi Gateway outdoors?

You can only deploy the FreedomFi 5G Gateway outdoors in an IP rated enclosure to protect it from water. FreedomFi 5G Gateways have a ruggedized, industrial grade casing that can operate in +14 to +122 F temperature range, but cannot be directly exposed to rain.

Will this device provide 5G coverage?

Out of the box, the FreedomFi Gateway alone does not provide 5G cellular coverage.

I want to use FreedomFi for my Private LTE/5G network and don’t want to mine HNT. Is that still possible?

Yes. HNT mining is a new, optional capability that can be switched on and off.
